Operating While Intoxicated: Michigan Lyft Drivers

Operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) is a serious criminal charge in Michigan. Unfortunately, it is one of the most common crimes committed by residents in the state. In 2021, a report by Michigan’s Annual Drunk Driving Audit (DDA) program revealed that 27,506 individuals were arrested for drunk driving.

Statistics like these have caused Michigan legislators to impose stringent OWI laws. While some obey the statutes, others choose to rebel against them.

In July 2022, a Lyft driver was arrested by the Troy Police Department after she was caught operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a passenger onboard. Amadi Ugonna, the commuter, requested a ride at 3 in the morning after attending a party to travel back home to Rochester Hills from Detroit.

Ugonna stated that while the Lyft driver was navigating the vehicle, she began to swerve and her eyes looked glossy. Troy’s law enforcement officers also noted that they could smell a strong odor of intoxicants emanating from the vehicle. When asked about this, the driver confessed she had two bottles of beer before getting behind the wheel.

The Lyft driver failed her sobriety tests and was charged for having a BAC of .18%, which is well over the legal limit.
